This tutorial is addressed only to who runs his own web server and I
assume you have already done all the steps to get your site up and running. Having one ore more
sub-domains can be very useful for many reasons, like
keeping separate sections of your website, for example,if you have website
called mysite.com and a forum running together, you can create a sub-domain like
forum.mysite.com.
While, they will give your website a professional look, may also improve
your search engine ranking because they are effectively different domains
and search engines treat them as separate web sites.
To set up a
sub-domain,visit zoneedit.com
,login to your account and click manage next to your site
name.
On the page
below click IP Addresses
Fig 1
Fig 2
In the next window(fig 2),type the
name of the sub-domain in the name box and the IP Address ( It
will be the same as the parent website)in the Numeric IP.Now
click Add New IP Adress
Fig 3
On the new
window ,check all the details are correct and click YES. Now when
somebody types your sub-domain name in a web browser, zoneedit
will resolve the request into the IP Address and send it to your
web server which is listening on that IP.The
web server needs to be configured appropriately to handle the
request for the sub-domain and we'll see how in Configuring
the web server for sub-domains
.
You can check if zoneedit is resolving your
sub-domain name into an IP Address with nslookup command from the command
prompt. It should do it nearly immediately after you added the
sub-domain.(FIG 4)
