"Just a note to say thank you very much for your very helpful notes on installing php on vista.  John"

This is about installing PHP 5.2.12-Win32 on IIS 7,the new Web Server running on  Vista 32 bit.(If you have Apache read this Installing PHP with Apache on Vista)You can visit the PHP website and download the php version php-5.2.12-Win32.zip for the manual installation not the windows installer version, which,I believe is encountering some problems..As IIS 7 is not installed by default on Vista, you will have to install it as well.See this step by step tutorial to learn how to do it.How to install IIS 7 .

As this version of PHP,soon won't be any longer supported by PHP and the new 5.3 and newer versions don't support isapi and the file php5isapi.dll is not present any more, we strongly suggest to install the fast-cgi version, for this purpose there is a new tutorial to help you installing this new version           Installing PHP on IIS7 Fast-CGI

Save and close the php.ini file.

Thank you! I've been fighting for a few hours to setup PHP under IIS 7 on my work machine for development and testing. I tried many different things, but this is the final step that all the tutorials are missing. Thanks again.

Your information is great. However, IIS7 does not include the filter, phpisapi5. I found updated information at http://forums.iis.net/t/1158874.asp x and and at http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/246/ using-fastcgi-to-host-php-applicati ons-on-iis-70/#Windows_Vista_SP1. I am running Vista, so the Vista site really helped me. Between your site and the Microsoft site I am better able to learn the nuts and bolts of how to implement server side technologies. Thank you for all you do.
