How to manage Windows Firewall

   A firewall is a software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network to your computer through a port,and then  it may either allow or block this information depending on the setting.Here  are a few tips how you can configure Windows Vista Firewall .

To change Windows Firewall settingsl

  1. Go to  Start > Control Panel dblclick on the icon Windows Firewall (see Fig1)

  3. A window opens .You can either click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off on the left pane or Change Setting on the right (See Fig.2)

  5. In the second window ,very intuitive,you can turn Windows Firewall on or off (see Fig 3)

  7. To allow or block a program click on exceptions Tab,and then check the box next to the program you want to grant permission, if you can't find it,click add program and browse to find the program on your Hard Drive.(See Fig.4)

  9. If you want to add a specific port for a Program (for example MySql server) click add port on the Exceptions window (fig 4) and Type the name of the program  and port number and press OK (Fig 5}.

  11. If you want to change the setting of a specific program,select it in the Exceptions window(fig 4) and click Properties ,you'll see a window like in(Fig 6).Click on Change Scope.

  13. Here you can put limits on what computer or set of computers will or not have this port or program open.  (Fig 7}.

  15. On the Advanced tab you can choose which connection or network you want Windows Firewall to be on, by selecting the checkbox (on) or deselecting  it (off).  (Fig 8}.
